Have you ever thought about how much a garden needs to grow? 🌼
Water, sunlight, and care… without those, plants can’t thrive.
The same is true for us.
Big Idea
When we trust God, He takes care of us and helps us grow—just like a well-watered garden.
Bible Verse
“The Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden.” — Isaiah 58:11 (ESV)
Lesson for Kids
A garden grows best when it gets:
Water 💧 Sun ☀️ Care 🌱
God gives us what we need too:
His Word 📖 Prayer 🙏 Love and guidance 💛
Even when life feels dry or hard, God is still taking care of us.
Talk About It
Ask your kids:
What happens to plants when they don’t get water? How does God take care of us? What can we do to stay close to God?
Activity: My Garden With God
Have your child draw a garden 🌸
Then:
Add flowers or plants On each one, write how God helps them (guides me, loves me, forgives me, helps me)
Teach the Verse
“I will be like a watered garden!”
Explain it simply:
God guides us God gives us what we need God helps us grow strong
One of my favorite ways to teach this is through hand motions!
Hand motions for I will be like a watered garden!
Say the phrase together first:
“I will be like a watered garden!”
“I will” Point to yourself “be like” Hold hands out flat (like you’re showing something) “a garden” Wiggle fingers upward like plants growing
God guides us
Motion: Point up, then use your hand like you’re leading someone forward
Simple way to say it:
“God shows us where to go.”
God gives us what we need
Motion: Hold hands out like you’re receiving a gift
Simple way to say it:
“God takes care of us.”
God helps us grow strong
Motion: Start crouched down, then slowly stand tall and flex arms 💪
Simple way to say it:
“God makes us strong inside.”
Boom! Now time to put it all together
Say and act it out:
“God guides us” (point up + lead forward) “God gives us what we need” (receive hands) “God helps us grow strong” (grow + flex)
Final Thought
Just like a garden needs daily care, our hearts grow when we stay close to God.
Sometimes God uses the most unexpected places to remind us of truth. Even a children’s show can reflect deeper spiritual lessons about our walk with Him.
In Dora the Explorer, every adventure follows a similar pattern. There is a destination, obstacles along the way, and tools that help Dora finish the journey.
Surprisingly, that pattern mirrors many parts of the Christian life.
The Grumpy Old Troll – Identity in Christ
The grumpy old troll stands at the bridge and refuses to let Dora pass unless she answers his riddle correctly. His goal is to confuse her and make her second guess herself.
In many ways, lies about our identity work the same way.
The enemy whispers things like:
You’re not good enough. You’ll never change. You’re too broken. You’re not chosen.
Those lies try to block our path forward. But the way across the bridge is answering the riddle with truth.
Scripture reminds us who we really are in Christ: redeemed, forgiven, chosen, and loved. When we respond with God’s truth instead of believing the lie, the path forward opens.
Swiper No Swiping – Guarding What God Gave You
Swiper always tries to sneak in and steal something important from Dora’s journey.
The enemy works the same way in our lives. He looks for opportunities to steal our peace, joy, confidence, and hope.
But God has not left His people defenseless.
Through Scripture, prayer, praise, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, believers have everything needed to resist temptation and stand firm in truth.
Just as Dora confidently says “Swiper, no swiping,” believers can stand on God’s Word and refuse to let the enemy take what God has given.
Follow the Map – God’s Guidance
Whenever Dora isn’t sure where to go next, she checks the map.
God has given believers a map for life through His Word.
Psalm 119:105 says
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
A lamp does not illuminate the entire road miles ahead. It simply lights the next step in front of you. God often guides His people in the same way.
We want the full plan. God gives the next step.
His Word faithfully directs us forward, even when we cannot see the whole journey.
The Backpack – The Tools God Already Gave You
Dora’s backpack always contains exactly what she needs for the adventure ahead.
In the same way, God has already equipped believers with the tools needed for the journey of faith.
He has given us His Word. He has given us prayer. He has given us the armor of God. He has given us the Holy Spirit. And He has given us a community of believers to walk beside us.
These gifts strengthen us when the road feels difficult and help us keep moving forward.
The Bigger Picture
The Christian life is a journey.
Sometimes the path feels uncertain. Sometimes obstacles appear. Sometimes the enemy tries to confuse or discourage us.
But God has not left us without help.
He gave us a map. He gave us truth. He gave us tools. And He gave us people to walk beside us.
Church family and faithful friends are often part of how God guides and strengthens us. On the days when our own light feels dim, the faith of others can help illuminate the path ahead. Together, believers remind one another of truth, pray for each other, and keep pointing back to God’s Word.
Step by step, through His Word, His Spirit, and His people, God is faithfully leading us exactly where we need to go.
When You Feel Lost
If you feel lost today, remember this:
Follow the map. Answer lies with truth. Guard what God has given you. And keep walking with the people God has placed beside you.
In Dora the Explorer, every adventure begins the same way.
Dora checks the map.
When she and Boots aren’t sure where to go next, they pull out the map and it shows them the path step by step.
First the forest. Then the bridge. Then the mountain. Then the destination.
The map doesn’t usually show every detail of the journey all at once. It simply shows the next step.
That is often how God guides us.
Psalm 119:105 says Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
A lamp doesn’t illuminate the entire road miles ahead. It lights the step right in front of you. God’s Word works the same way. Scripture guides us one faithful step at a time.
And just like Dora’s adventures, the journey of faith has obstacles along the way.
Sometimes we face the grumpy old troll.
In Dora the Explorer, the troll blocks the bridge and tries to confuse Dora with riddles before she can cross. In our lives, lies about our identity can block our path in the same way. The enemy twists truth and tries to convince us we are failures, rejected, or unworthy.
But the way across the bridge is answering the riddle with truth.
God calls us redeemed, chosen, forgiven, beloved, and a new creation.
Other times we encounter Swiper.
Swiper sneaks in and tries to steal something important from Dora’s journey. The enemy works the same way in our lives. He tries to swipe our peace, joy, confidence, and hope.
But believers are not defenseless.
God has already given us tools.
Just like Dora carries a backpack full of items she needs for the adventure, God has equipped us with spiritual tools for the journey.
The Word of God Prayer Praise The armor of God The Holy Spirit Community with other believers
When fear tries to steal your peace, you open the backpack and turn to Scripture. When discouragement tries to steal your joy, you turn to praise. When doubt creeps in, you pray and remember God’s promises.
The journey of faith looks a lot like Dora’s adventure.
You follow the map. You face obstacles. You use the tools you’ve been given. And you keep moving forward.
You may not see the whole path ahead, but you don’t need to.
God has already given you the map, the truth to answer lies, and the tools to keep walking.
All you have to do is follow Him step by step.
The troll may try to confuse you. Swiper may try to steal from you. The path may feel uncertain.
But God has given you everything you need for the journey.
If you feel lost today, you are not without direction.
God has not left you to figure out life on your own. His Word is the map that guides your steps, even when the road ahead feels unclear. You may not see the entire journey, but He faithfully lights the next step.
When lies try to confuse you like the grumpy old troll, remember who God says you are.
When the enemy tries to steal your peace or joy like Swiper, remember the tools God has already given you.
And when you’re unsure where to go next, open the map.
Spend time in Scripture. Pray for wisdom. Take the next faithful step.
You don’t have to know the whole path.
You just have to trust the One who wrote the map.
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
A lamp does not light the entire road far ahead. It simply gives enough light to see the next step in front of you. That is often how God guides us.
We want to see the whole journey. God gives us the next step.
We want certainty about the future. God gives direction for today.
His Word shows us where to place our foot next. It keeps us from wandering into places that would harm us and leads us toward the life He intends for us.
But God never intended for us to walk that path alone.
Sometimes the lamp of Scripture lights the ground right in front of us. Other times, God places people beside us who help us see clearly when the path feels dark. Church family, mentors, and faithful friends often become part of the way God guides us.
They remind us of truth when we forget it. They pray with us when the road feels heavy. They help point us back to God’s Word when we feel confused or discouraged.
In many ways, the Christian life is like a group of travelers walking the same path together, each person carrying a small lamp. When those lights come together, the path becomes easier to see.
God guides us through His Word. God strengthens us through His Spirit. And God supports us through the people He places in our lives.
You may not see the entire path ahead yet. But if you stay close to God’s Word and stay connected to the believers walking beside you, you will continue moving in the direction God intends.
In honor of my connection to Dora the Explorer, I’ve been thinking about Swiper.
There’s always that moment when Swiper sneaks in quietly. He doesn’t usually announce himself. He just shows up and tries to take what isn’t his. And if Dora and her friends don’t respond quickly and confidently with, “Swiper, no swiping,” he grabs something valuable and runs.
Swiper is a picture of how the enemy works in our lives.
He tries to swipe:
Your peace
Your joy
Your confidence
Your calling
Your identity
Your hope
He rarely starts with something obvious. He slips in through discouragement, comparison, fear, offense, doubt, or distraction.
One small thought: “Maybe God won’t come through this time.”
One whisper: “You’re not equipped for this.”
One comparison that quietly steals your joy.
But just like in the show, we are not defenseless.
God has already given us tools, our handy dandy backpack.
When Dora faces an obstacle, she doesn’t panic. She says, “Backpack!” And inside is exactly what she needs for the journey. Not random items. Not decorations. Tools.
In the same way, God has already given us a spiritual backpack.
Inside are:
The Word of God
Prayer
Praise
The armor of God
The Holy Spirit
Community with other believers
The backpack represents preparation.
We don’t walk through life empty handed. We don’t face battles unequipped. We don’t cross bridges or confront Swiper alone.
The Word of God is our map and compass. It tells us what is true when lies try to confuse us.
Prayer is our communication line. It keeps us connected to the One guiding the journey.
Praise shifts the atmosphere. When obstacles look big, praise reminds us that God is bigger.
The armor of God is our protection. Helmet. Shield. Sword. We are not walking through a battlefield exposed.
The Holy Spirit is our guide: leading, correcting, comforting, strengthening.
Community is the group walking beside us. No one completes the adventure alone.
Here’s where the real impact is.
Dora never discovers the backpack halfway through the problem. She has it the whole time.
In the same way, God has already packed what you need inside your life. You don’t have to strive to earn the tools. You don’t have to build them from scratch. They are already given.
When fear shows up, you open the backpack. When doubt whispers, you open the backpack. When the enemy tries to swipe your joy, you open the backpack.
Sometimes the solution feels simple. But simple does not mean powerless.
The Word still works
Prayer still works
Praise still works
The Spirit still leads
You are not walking this journey empty. You are equipped.
The question isn’t whether you have tools. The question is whether you remember to reach into the backpack.
When fear tries to swipe your peace, you use the Word. When discouragement tries to swipe your joy, you use praise. When insecurity tries to swipe your confidence, you remember who God says you are. When doubt tries to swipe your faith, you pray and declare truth.
Scripture says the joy of the Lord is our strength. That means our joy isn’t based on circumstances. It’s anchored in who He is.
Confidence in God is like standing firm and saying, “Swiper, no swiping.” But spiritually it sounds like:
No, fear, you don’t get my peace.
No, comparison, you don’t get my joy.
No, shame, you don’t get my identity.
No, doubt, you don’t get my confidence in God.
Here’s the key:
Dora didn’t whisper it timidly. She said it with authority.
We don’t resist the enemy by hoping he leaves. We resist him by standing on truth.
When we declare Scripture… When we worship in the middle of a battle… When we trust God before we see the outcome…
We are using the tools He already placed in our hands.
Swiper only succeeds when we stay silent or forget what we have.
But when you remember:
God is for you
God is with you
God has equipped you
Then what the enemy tries to swipe cannot stay in his hands.
Your joy is guarded.
Your peace is protected.
Your confidence is rooted.
Because what is anchored in the Lord cannot be stolen.
In Dora the Explorer, before Dora can cross the bridge, she has to face the Grumpy Old Troll. He stands in the way and won’t let her cross until she answers the riddle correctly, He tries to confuse her. He twists things. He makes her stop and second guess herself
That troll is a lot like the negative voice in our head, giving names.
The grumpy old troll in our lives tells us
You’re not good enough
You always mess things up
You’re too much
You’re not chosen
You’ll never change
Sometimes those lies even twist the bits of truth that we know, kinda like the enemy can twist Scripture. A simple mistake becomes “I am a failure.” A weakness becomes “I am worthless.” A sin becomes “I am beyond redemption.”
That’s the riddle, The riddle is……
Will you believe the name the troll gives you, or the name Christ gives you?
Jesus calls you:
Redeemed
Chosen
Forgiven
Daughter / Son
New Creation
Beloved
More than a conqueror
The troll stands at the bridge of your identity and demands you to agree with a lie before you pass. But like Dora, you don’t move forward by arguing emotionally, you move forward by answering correctly.
The answer is Truth.
When the lie says, “You’re rejected,”
Truth says, I am accepted in the Beloved.
When the lie says, “You’re condemned,”
Truth says, There is now no condemnation.
When the lie says, “You’re alone,”
Truth says, He will never leave nor forsake me.
Every time you answer with truth, you step onto the bridge.
And here’s the magical part:
The troll never disappears because you defeated him emotionally. He disappears because you refused to agree with him.
The bridge represents the crossing from false names to true identity. From shame to sonship. From striving to belonging. From accusation to inheritance.
The enemy’s strategy is always accusation and distortion.
God’s strategy is always declaration and restoration.
You don’t overcome the troll by being louder.
You overcome by knowing who you are. Once you cross that bridge enough times, you realize something powerful: The troll was never the authority.

Imagine a place where history and imagination meet — where steel and steam once carried newly arrived immigrants, then later became the canvas for whimsical artistry. That place exists, and it’s now on the market. The Historic Yankee Ferry, a century-old vessel rich with stories and character, is for sale for $1.25 million, and it’s not your typical real estate listing. V&R Emprise
A Century of Stories on the Water
Built in 1907 in Philadelphia, the Yankee Ferry began life as a hardworking ferryboat, connecting people to islands and ports along the Eastern seaboard. Over the decades it wore many hats — from carrying troopers and supplies during World War I and II, to serving as an immigration ferry to Ellis Island, and later as a tour boat in New York Harbor. Today, it stands as the last remaining Ellis Island ferry still afloat, and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993. V&R Emprise+1
This floating relic stretches about 150 feet long, with four levels, seven bedrooms, and nearly 10,000 square feet — a truly sprawling space by any measure. V&R Emprise
A Home Full of Artistic Flair
For nearly 25 years, the Yankee has had a second life as a home and studio for renowned artists Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs. Known for founding the beloved design brand MacKenzie-Childs, the couple has adorned the ferry’s interior with their signature imaginative and whimsical aesthetic, creating a living space that feels more like an immersive work of art than a houseboat. V&R Emprise+1
Tucked into its Staten Island berth, the Yankee is a blend of rich history and creative vision — a place where original architectural remnants meet playful colors, patterns, and textures that reflect the couple’s decades of artistry. Gothamist
A Unique Opportunity for New Stories
The current stewards of this historic vessel are ready to pass the torch. On their site, the couple highlights that the ferry’s potential goes far beyond serving as a quirky residence. Future caretakers might reimagine it as:
A private event space
A tourist attraction or museum
A boutique hotel or boatel
A restaurant, café, or speakeasy
A quirky creative studio or gallery
…or maybe something even more unexpected and personal. The possibilities, as suggested on the listing, are as vast as the ferry’s four decks. V&R Emprise
Why It Matters
This isn’t just a houseboat for sale. It’s a rare chance to own a piece of American maritime history. Few vessels carry the layered legacy of Yankee — from serving waves of human migration to inspiring beauty and creativity on its decks. Power & Motoryacht
Whether you’re a lover of history, art, architecture, or just bold living spaces, the Historic Yankee Ferry stands as an invitation to imagine a life — and perhaps a business — all its own on the water.
🎨 The Original Artists Lost Control of Their Work MacKenzie-Childs was founded by ceramic artists Victoria and Richard MacKenzie-Childs. Following financial hardship and bankruptcy, they lost ownership of both their designs and the brand name itself.
📄 Contracts, Bankruptcy, and Unequal Power During bankruptcy proceedings, the company’s intellectual property was sold. As a result, the original artists were removed from the business entirely—no longer credited, involved, or compensated—despite the brand’s continued success using the aesthetic they created.
💔 The Creators Do Not Benefit Today Purchases made today do not support the original artists. MacKenzie-Childs is now owned by investors, not the creators whose vision established the brand’s identity.
⚠️ Why This Matters Many consumers choose not to support brands that: • Profit from artists without fair compensation • Continue using artists’ names without their involvement • Separate creative legacy from creator ownership
✨ Shop With Intention If supporting artists’ rights matters to you, consider buying from independent makers who retain ownership of their work.
Victoria and Richard have since started a new creative venture under a different name (V&R Emprise), where they create and sell their own art and designs independently — but this is separate from the MacKenzie-Childs brand and not tied to profits from it.
